Life Overflowing Series: Gifts
|
| Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. I Corinthians 12:4-7
Life Overflowing: God's Gifts All Around Us from Bishop Larry Wohlrabe
We're entering into one of the most anxious months of the year in many of our congregations: - Will we be able to come up with enough Sunday School teachers for another year?
- So how are we doing with this perennial task?
How does your congregation go about assembling a full complement of teachers for Sunday School? I fear that there are many nervous phone calls that go something like this:
"Sue, we have three more slots to fill on our Sunday School teaching staff for this fall. The Christian education board is frantically digging up warm bodies, and you have to help us out. It's been a while since you taught, after all, and you still have a kid in Sunday School-so you really should be doing your part, you know. If you and others don't say 'yes,' we might just need to cancel third grade this year. No one wants that to happen. So, what do you say?"
What if we approached the recruitment of Sunday School teachers-and all sorts of other servants of Christ in our congregations-in a completely different way? What if we started with the assumption that God is abundant, not stingy, and that in our congregations we have more than enough person-gifts to do God's work? What if we led with opportunities, callings, and gifts-rather than needs, obligations, and guilt? So dream with me, just a bit, about how we might receive in fresh ways God's overflowing gifts to each of us, for the building up of the Body of Christ.

Halstad Pastor's Article Lift's Up Quilters
|
| Pastor Christine Iverson of the Halstad Lutheran Parish has written an article that is currently posted on the website of Lutheran World Relief. She pays tribute to the ministries of the many quilting groups that meet in congregations across our synod and throughout the whole ELCA.
"An LWR quilt is special. It brings warmth on a
cold night and shelter from the sun on a hot day. It becomes a bed, a
room divider, a backpack to carry belongings, and at times, even a home."

Ethics of Eating Leadership Training
|
| Greetings from ELCA World Hunger! We are sponsoring a free leadership training, "Ethics of Eating," for ELCA Region 3 (North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota). Please share this invitation with your congregation and networks.
ELCA World Hunger "Ethics of Eating" Leadership Training September 23 - 26, 2010 Concordia Language Village near Marine on St. Croix, MN
Are you concerned about what you eat and the way that food is produced in the United States -- how it impacts the environment, those who are hungry and those who work in food production? Do you want to explore these issues with farmers and activists? Attend Ethics of Eating to and discuss justice
and lifestyle issues that result from the interconnections between what
we eat and the food distribution and production system in this country.
How should we eat in a way that it is just and healthy for human beings and the environment? We will explore this question from a theological perspective with respect to urban, local, organic and conventional farming, and the relation to hunger, food worker rights, and the environment.
The event will include local farmers, farm workers, food production workers, consumers, and actors in food, hunger and environmental justice networks. We will also visit farms and urban agriculture programs. We will also brainstorm about organizing, fundraising, education and the lifestyle of stewardship. After the workshop, each participant is expected to host an event in their local area.
Only 25 openings are available. Applications will be approved on a rolling basis beginning on August 15, 2010, until openings are filled. For an application, please contact Romelia Almaraz (Romelia.Almaraz@elca.org, 800-638-3522, ext. 2696).
More Information: If you have any questions about the event itself, please contact the
event coordinator, the Rev. Eva Jensen (evajensen101@gmail.com,
612-353-6636). |
