Hunger 101 Available for Groups

A hunger simulation experience for groups, Hunger 101, has been developed by Second Harvest Heartland and the Lutheran Coalition for Public Policy in Minnesota. The Northwestern Minnesota Hunger Commission members have been trained to present this simulation and have begun presenting it to pastors in the Synod.

During the simulation, participants are assigned randomly to a family needing food support. Participants work in pairs to determine the family’s budget for the month, and then work to obtain food for one day from the banker, food support office, food shelf and grocery store. Participants actually complete the food support application to obtain an EBT card (food stamps), which can be taken to the grocery store. In the process, participants struggle with the problems that persons needing food support may experience.

Members of the NWMN Hunger Commission are available to facilitate this simulation for other groups. Please contact Pastor Don Reisig (218-943-2891) or Darlene Larson Matz (218-222-3622) for more information.
