Creation Care Task Force Mission Statement:

Compelled by Christ and the urgent need for action, we strive to promote, educate, and advocate care for God's good creation, and to support congregations called to do the same.

What is a Creation Care Team?

A Creation Care Team is a gathering of parishioners who are committed to taking action within the church building and the church community to decrease carbon emissions through activities such as informational sessions, composting, ride sharing, energy audits, weatherization plans, possible installation of alternative energy sources, planting pollinator gardens, and much, much more!  All that is needed is imagination, faith, and commitment to stewardship of God's good creation!

Some Steps for Forming a Creation Care Team:

  • Gather some friends
  • Get Pastoral endorsement
  • Research the ELCA social statement on creation care
  • Become an officially recognized group by presenting to your council
  • Craft a mission statement
  • Brainstorm/set reasonable goals
  • Set a meeting schedule
  • Issue news releases
  • Pray!
  • Plan one event in the first 6 months
  • Embrace energy efficiencies
  • Reduce, reuse, recycle
  • Engage in advocacy

Possible First Steps:

  • Plan an adult ed opportunity on environmental stewardship.
  • Review your church utility bill.
  • Meet with your property committee to plan an energy audit.
  • Set a goal for reduction in energy bill and how you will get there.
  • Establish a "no water bottles" campaign.
  • Start a composting/organics program.
  • Volunteer to wash dishes instead of using disposables.
  • Plan a letter writing campaign.
