Preparing the Ministry Site Profile (MSP)

The MSP is an important document used by synod staff and prospective candidates during the call process. It helps candidates learn about your congregation and helps the synod discern a good match between the congregation’s needs and a candidate’s gifts, strengths, and passions.

Step 1: Create Your MSP Account

Begin by creating an account:

  • Click on the “Ministry Site Profile” link in the left-hand column to begin.
  • Be sure to save your email and password, as you will need them to return to your MSP while working on it.

Step 2: Watch the MSP Overview Video

This short video offers a helpful overview of the Ministry Site Profile and how it fits into the call process.

Step 3: Review the MSP Guide

Before beginning your work, read “A Guide to the MSP.”

  • Instructions for viewing a sample MSP can be found on page 3 of the guide.

  • Reviewing a sample can help your committee understand what the completed profile will look like.

Step 4: Conduct the Congregational Self-Study

The Conference Dean will meet with the call committee to introduce tools that can be used for conducting the congregation’s self-study.

The call committee will use the input gathered through this process to help prepare the MSP.

Step 5: Submit the Draft for Synod Review

Once the MSP draft is complete:

  • Submit it to the Synod Minister for Community and Leader Engagement for review.
  • They may suggest revisions to help improve clarity or strengthen the profile.

Step 6: Final Submission

After revisions are complete:

  • The MSP is submitted to the ELCA Mobility Website.

  • The bishop receives notification of the submission.

  • After final approval, the MSP becomes live and visible to candidates.

Additional Responsibilities for the Church Council

During this stage of the process, the church council should also prepare:

  • A job description for the position

  • Compensation and benefits using synod compensation guidelines

  • A budget for the call process, including:

    • Candidate travel
    • Meals
    • Overnight accommodations during interviews
